Well, the above pictures show you the most pleasant side of the exchange.
But, besides going around together and celebrating, we also spent some time at school, where the Italians taught and the Finnish (hopefully) learnt what Friuli is like.
Here
below is the Finnish group ready to enter the classes.

Some "mix and picks" about the experience
|
What I liked best in my Finnish mate was surely his temper. Lauri is (I dont write "was" because I hope he is still alive) a true "good guy". Everybody knows the popular tune " because he is a good fellow, because hes a good fellow, " but now Im the only one to know one thing : this tune was written for Lauri, my Finnish mate. Yes, Im quite sure, because (as Ive already said) hes really a good guy. Hes a very discreet boy: he has almost never spoken about his past love-stories, about his holidays, about Saturday nights in Finland, but not because he doesnt want to talk to another person, simply because he prefers to do than to speak, just the opposite of me ! He is also a very polite boy. Hes always been polite: at home, with my parents, with my teachers, with my classmates and with the Finnish girls, always, and especially with me. I thank God that Lauri came to me, and hes not a a kind of bear that can only drink beers and learn Italian bad words. An example of his politeness is that hes never asked me to teach him bad words, never. Maybe he had already learnt most of them before coming to Italy, but at least he didnt pronounce one of them during his visit here. I just want to say one last thing: give my words the right attention : saying that hes a very polite, quiet and discreet, Im not saying that he is boring. No, because Lauri, the discreet and quiet guy, is maybe the craziest Finn you can meet. Yes, thats true! He doesnt often speak, he doesnt often move, he doesnt often smile, but when he says something, everybody around him starts laughing; when he gets up and starts dancing, everybody is involved; when he smiles, you have to smile too, because hes too funny. Yeah, this is what I liked best in my Finnish friend: THAT HE IS AS CRAZY AS ME !!! |

Ill never forget the time when Piia (my Finnish mate), my mother, my brother and I went to Grado. She was very excited when she saw our nice sea and I was very happy, because at last I didnt feel so shy and I could talk to her about anything. We walked about the centre of Grado and I could see that she was happy because the people and the places we were visiting were warm and full of vitality. Ill never forget the moment when she tasted our ice-cream for the first time. She liked it so much, and she ate it so fast that even her nose tasted it; in fact her nose was soon full of ice-cream. We started laughing and we enjoyed ourselves very much. She also wanted to play minigolf but the course was closed, because it opens only in the Summer. We also had a lot of fun when my brother tried to speak with her, and when he made some mistakes he went all red in his face. He was very funny. I think that Ill never forget her, because thanks to her, Ive learnt that I must be ready to face any situation. My Finnish friend and I were very different, but in any case I love her so much. Thanks Piia, Ill never forget you!! |
| What I liked best in my Finnish mate was her response to
the Italian culture, food and traditions.
When she arrived she told me that she wanted to try everything here, she wanted to know how Italian people really live. She wanted me to talk to her about the most important cities here in Italy and to show her pictures of Rome. We talked a lot about our school system because their high school is quite different and she was very interested. She also wanted to learn Italian and in the end she could speak a bit. I really liked her because she was very kind and friendly with me and my family. |

I wish I had known Laura, the girl who came to my house, better. Unfortunately, before she arrived we had never had any contact so we knew nothing about each other. Laura is quite a shy person and I found that talking with her was difficult: even when she didnt want something she answered positively just not to hurt me or my family. So, of course, at the beginning everything was difficult. Anyway I realized that she got more open if there was another Finn with us. Laura needs to feel confident...just like me. I could notice that we are quite similar, in some behaviours: we are both shy, sometimes insecure and last (but most important) we start being ourselves only when we have known, at least a bit, the people we are staying with: in fact Laura began to be more open and relaxed only on the last day of her visit. However, I absolutely think that when I go to visit her in Finland next September everything will be easier because we now already know each other and, after all, we Italians had the role of being ice-breakers. |
Last, but absolutely not least, the exchange was source of inspiration for new products to be devised and commercialised by the "IG Students" group of our School.
They created not only the LOGO for our Project (which was also used to make an elegant enamel pin to be offered to students and teachers of the parternship schools) but also this commemorative pennant
